A headache is an unpleasant pain in the head, neck or face that can cause feelings of pressure and aching. It is usually experienced as throbbing, constant, sharp or dull. The pain can range from mild to severe and occurs on one or both sides of the head. Some common affected areas include the forehead, temples and back of the neck. It can last anywhere from 30 minutes to a week. According to the Mayo Clinic, the most common type is a tension headache and its triggers include stress, muscle strain and anxiety.
Cluster headaches are severely painful and occur on one side of the head, usually in the form of “clusters” (bouts of frequent attack). Sinus forms co-occur with symptoms of infection like fever, stuffy nose, cough, congestion and facial pressure. Chiari headaches are severe and develop in 60 seconds or less, like a “thunderclap”. These can be indicative of a serious underlying medical condition and may require urgent medical care.
Migraine headaches can be severe and often have other symptoms in addition to head pain. Sufferers can experience symptoms such as visual auras (seeing spots or flashing lights), nausea and vomiting, temporary vision loss, sensitivity to light and/or sound, as well as pain behind one eye/ ear or in the temples.
